This idea popped into my head whilst I was bored on watch. It’s 00:45 in the morning. I’ve never done anything like this before. Every day is a learning day as they Royal Navy likes to say. Criticism accepted lol.
Revanius’ breath left him as he hit the floor, hard. Revan rolled onto his back and stared at the forest canopy, beams of sunlight breaking through the pine trees that surrounded him and his opponent.
“You lack focus today” a voice off to his side proclaimed. Revan grunted and reached for his twin short elven swords. Grabbing both by the hilts he stood to face his attacker, a gurgling croak, rising in pitch sounded from the treetops.
“Let’s continue” his opponent said simply. Revan immediately feinted to his right then pivoted away as a quarterstaff hit where he had just been standing. He moved towards a tree, intending to use it as leverage towards his opponent. Revan hit the tree, turning and spinning as once again the quarterstaff hit where he had just been. He glanced at the face of his opponent as he moved through the air, a smile on his opponents face. Reven’s blades moved, intending to strike at the chest and arms but missed as his opponent adjusted his stance to avoid the blades.
Revan landed, spinning with his blades out stretched to give him some breathing room. His spin finished and he adopted an attacking stance then charged forward, blades in position. His opponent sighed and before Revan knew what was happening he was on his back, swords no longer in his hands with the quarterstaff at his throat.
“We’re done for today” his opponent said and then offered his hand, pulling Revan to his feet with ease. Revan sighed, feeling that he could achieve more today but knew it would be useless to argue. Instead he picked his twin swords up and sheathed then on his back.
He turned, ready to go. “Shall we head back father” he said to his opponent who smiled then whistled. The raven in the trees swooped down and land on his shoulder. Reven’s father stroked the bird gently then nodded. Slowly they made their way back to their simple home in the Misty Forest. It was a short ways away from their little training ground. Birds and insects buzzed and chirped as they walked in silence.
Finally his father spoke. “I think it’s time you left this place Revanius. It’s time you made your way out into the world. Discovered other peoples, other places, honed your skills. I have trained you enough I think.”
Revan turned to his father. “When?” he said simply.
“Why, this afternoon of course” his father said with a chuckle.
Revan remained silent as they approached their home. A cabin made from logs of oak, the wood’s natural beauty radiating a welcome that had always pleased Revan. A small line of smoke left via the chimney. His mother and father had built it together, or so his father told him, before his mother had left soon after Revan was born.
“I have packed you a backpack” his father told him as they entered. “It should have everything you need to survive out in the wilderness.”. Revan turned to his father. He was a broad man of 60. Dark hair was kept short which was a sharp contrast to Revan’s shock white hair. “What would you have me do?” Revan asked.
His father smiled again as he always did when his son asked him question. “like I said, Meet new peoples, make friends, find love, do good, train.” his father replied. “I think you are ready. You have learned all I can teach you for now. The elves will allow you free passage through the forest to the edge.” His father sat, nursing his muscles.
Revan turned and picked up the backpack, hoisting it onto his shoulders. “I won’t disappoint you father.” he said, then paused. “I’ll also see if I can find mother”
His father looked up suddenly at the last part then shook his head. He stood and moved round to his son, hugging him. “I hope you do, she was an amazing woman who could do anything.”
Revan broke the hug, turning to the door. “Goodbye father, I shall send letters when I can” Revan then walked through the open door and onto the start of his new life.
