The Frontiers Saga- A Review
Throughout history, certain discoveries, inventions, events, and even people, have changed the course of civilizations. Occasionally, these elements come together to change the destiny of humanity.
When you deploy with the Royal Navy, you always make sure you have plenty of books, movies and videogames to play to keep you entertained when you are not on watch or working. Space being a premium, I have always make sure my Kindle is full of different kinds of books to read to keep my mind occupied. I just finished Ashoka (I liked it) and have been reading a book series I discovered years ago known as the Frontiers Saga. It’s by a relatively unknown (by modern day standards) author known as Ryk Brown. He self publishes (as far as I’m aware) on Amazon and I thought I’d give his series a tiny review plus I believe that this is just another way for unknown authors (by unknown I mean like obviously the guy isn’t J.K. Rowling) to get new fans who might enjoy his series.
So here we go. I’ve never reviewed a book or book series before. I’ve got no idea what to write or put down. I know I could google “how to review a book” and it would spit out loads of how too’s but I’ll just give my honest opinion and people will either go and read one and like it or go decide against it.
So to start. The series is broken down into 5 parts of 15 books each. The author is currently on book 8 of part 3. I’m currently on book 15 of part 2. The books aren’t the longest in length and do you know what, I like that. The chapters are shortish and snappy with something always going on to keep you reading.
The characters are pretty well rounded and you will find that you have your favorite as well as characters that you will dislike. My favorite is a pilot known as Josh Hayes but that’s only because he reminds me of me as a young 19 year old. Confident in his own abilities and a disregard for the rules, cliché I know.
The main character is Nathan Scott. Pampered, son of a well to do family. His character grows throughout the series and is a great example of what someone who is thrust into power but doesn’t seek it is capable of. He can be annoying and whiney but if you read his story you’ll find out why that is. Another favorite of mine is General Telles. Very intelligent, stoic, loyal and sarcastic without meaning too be.
The planets themselves are very well described. The universe is vast beyond imagining and with that in mind there’s an infinite way to describe each of the planets that human could one day populate.
I guess the main character of the series would be the ship herself. Aurora. She’s where a lot of the action happens. She gets beaten, she gets damaged but I’ve found myself cheering more than once when she’s gotten through a battle by the skin of her hull.
Ultimately this is a sci-fi series, spaceships, space travel etc, so if that’s your cup of tea then I do believe that you’ll love this series. There’s not really any romance in the series but some is hinted at that. I think that’s deliberate from the author though I’ve not managed to find any reason why he would keep it out.
Another reason I’ve enjoyed it is has the Game of Thrones effect. No one is safe. Anyone can die. More than one character I’ve liked has come to an untimely end. I always enjoy it when this happens as it means there’s more on the line and you become more invested in the characters.
I know. I know. It’s not the best review. It’s more about trying to draw attention to authors that don’t have the same reach as someone as J.R.R Tolkien or J.K. Rowling has. I’ve enjoyed the series as I’ve written above. The books are cheap which in my eyes makes them great value for money for the story you get, especially as they’ve helped me from not going mad during my deployment.
Once again I apologise for any spelling mistakes or any punctuation. I’m not a writer and this is just a way to put myself out there a little bit and I still feel SubStack is full of politics and vaccines and just general bad news so something like this is just a nice change.
I hope you are all in good health and are happy.

Nice! It's cool that you have so much time to read. I used to be like you haha.
If you want more ideas for writing book reviews, the paper publishes those all the time. The best way to become a good writer is to read from good writers!
And if you ever want to review one of my webcomic arcs, I'll draw a portrait of you!
I have a sneaky suspicion that you'll like my books :D
