Agree with your statement and sentiment completely. It’s fine if people want to be idiots and think oil is bad, but it’s not ok to fight for your ideas in these crazy, destructive, narcissistic, dangerous ways. That has to stop. A harsh message (in terms of legal punishment) is needed in order to put a stop to it.

Agreed. That was what I would say to people.

Cornstarch today is acid tomorrow if some activist thinks they’re not being taken seriously.

"Robin Hood's Ball"?

Expand full comment

So Robin Hood’s Ball is a causeway enclosure about 4km Northwest of Stonehenge.

It’s a Neolithic feature that dates from the earliest developments around the plain. It was roughly built at around 4000 BC and in use possibly up to 3000 BC.

The exact functions of causewayed enclosures are unknown. There are suggestions that include use as trade centres, for defence, ritual, and celebration, with multiple uses possible.

Do you know how and why it got named after Robin Hood?

I’ve read that it’s nothing to do with the folklore hero Robin Hood.

The best I could find was from Wikipedia which says that a map of the area shows a little copse of trees was called Robins Hood Ball which has grown to encompass the whole area.

I thought so. Stonehenge isn't anywhere near Sherwood Forest.

This was fabulous, thanks Vulcan! What I had not appreciated until now… if the structure took ~1200 years to build, the forethought into the future use of the structure is almost more astounding than the structure itself. You're looking at over 50 generations of planning. We rarely plan for things 50 years away it feels like, I can't imagine planning 1000 years ahead all with the goal of gazing into the heavens.

What was the race of the people that built it? Do we have their Haplogroup? Are they Rb1 or something exotic?

Thank you, Vulkan, for this post

I agree that there must be punishment for those who vandalize, regardless of their motives! Harsh punishment of some may be a very effective deterrent for others.

That's okay!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!

I would love to know what happened when the Indo Europeans that eventually became the Irish took over from the people who built Stonehedge.

I’m sure that information is out there somewhere.

Brilliant exposition- my ancestral memory stirred and was revulsed by these ignorant, narcissistic sorry excuses of humanity but I wholeheartedly endorse your comment and loved reading your history of this special place

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed it.

Great piece. Didn’t realize those JSO dopes were desecrating a grave site, in addition to vandalizing a World Heritage site.

As Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce said, “A man who would not love his father’s grave is worse than a wild animal”.

They probably haven’t got a clue about the history of Stonehenge.

The harsher the better as far as these childish twerps are concerned.
