Brave and noble fate.

Looking forward to reading this later Vulkan. I have to go out right now. But I had to say that my grandad served on the Hood in WW2. At least for a while. Not at the time of its sinking. He also served on the Ajax.

I bet he has/had some stories. Did he ever have any trinkets etc from his time in the RN?

He died in 1977. So I was quite young. Just about 11. So I did have some medals and bits but I have no idea where they are now. He never talked about it much to me cos I was so little. But I know he was a boxer in the navy winning lots of stuff. And he was a great guy. Always watched Dr Who (Pertwee the best!) with me. A lovely man. I think he had some shrapnel in his leg they could never remove. Which fascinated me.

Well he was a hero. I don't blame him for not talking much about things. You should see if you could find those medals as I'm sure the Navy wold love it if you donated them as they would display them etc.

Great article Vulkan. Thank you. I’ll ask my mum about those medals. If anyone has them it will be her. All the best.

Jon Pertwee was on HMS Hood. He was transferred off Hood just before she left on her last voyage. IIRC it was for a training course of some kind.

I didn’t know that. I used to watch him as Dr Who with my grandad. Always my favourite Dr. It’s one of my main memories of my granddad. Chanting ‘Whoozer! Whoozer!’ In his thick Glaswegian accent as we waited for the show to start on a Saturday afternoon. Thanks for that Summer.
